I was born in 1979. More than twenty years ago I discovered pottery almost by chance. After studying at the Art Institute of Arezzo, I was lucky to find a job as an apprentice in an artistic ceramic workshop. It was not a traditional workshop, but a place where I could learn the secrets of stoneware and porcelain, two uncommon materials in Italy.
The first impact was both absolutely dazzling and at the same time, familiar. It was as if I had always known this fine-grained, fresh and malleable material. My artistic career began in this way. As an apprentice, working and studying, I felt I absolutely had to learn everything! I wanted to master the technique, master the material, then observe it from the inside, and understand it each time it seemed to rebel.
Technique
The pieces are made on the wheel, or with the use of original molds created in the studio, or with slab building. In some cases, the works are enriched by various and multiple decoration techniques.
The pieces are left to dry naturally and put in the kiln for a first firing at 950 ° called bisque firing. After glazing, a second firing at 1260 ° will follow, giving the final color.
Material
Materials used at SPORE: stoneware and porcelain.
Stoneware can be of several colors. It covers practically all shades of brown, from brown-black, brown, rust, ocher, to a very light sand. I use the latter for my production. Stoneware adapts to multiple processes and allows for a very thin wall while maintaining excellent resistance. I fire at 1260 °. At this temperature stoneware takes on a vitrified and material appearance.
Porcelain has a pure white color that allows you to play with the light that passes through it when you have very thin layers. Unlike stoneware, it is not easy to work with, it takes some dedication, but if you want to enjoy the elegant and precious look of a porcelain object, it is well worth the effort. It is also fired at 1260 °, although it tolerates higher temperatures (1300 °).
All objects are glazed with original formulas, each color and texture is created by SPORE, in the studio. After extensive research and testing, the colors are selected according to the desired characteristics.
